TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Crimson White (CW) staff recently earned eight first place awards at the 14th Annual Southeast Journalism Conference, held at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Ga.
The CW is the student newspaper at UA.
The CW staff placed first in the on-site competition against students from 32 other universities represented at the conference. In addition to the on-site awards, the newspaper won first place for best news section and second place for best sports section in the Best Newspaper contest.
On-site winners from UA were Emilie Kraft of Cullman, CW editorial page editor, first place in the news rewrite category; Megan Lavey of Montgomery, CW student government editor, first place for breaking news writing; Evan Woodbery of Germantown, Tenn., CW managing editor, first place for headline writing; Matt Tidmore of Huntsville, sports editor, first place for writing; Jennifer Ackerman of Sarasota, Fla., design editor, third place for page design.
Winners in the pre-judged categories were Lavey and Mike Perry of Atlanta, Ga., first place for best news series; Stan Chin of Tuscaloosa, staff artist, first place for best computer-generated news artwork; Ackerman, second place for best page one layout; Michael Dudley, second place for best non-computer generated feature artwork; Tidmore, third place for best sports feature story; Joseph Bryant of Birmingham (zip code 35216), metro/state editor, honorable mention for best feature story; Lavey, honorable mention for best in-depth story.
Photography awards were presented to Jessica Tucker of Nashville, Tenn., second place for best feature photograph; Dan Murphy of Peekskill, N.Y., honorable mention for best personality photo; Tamika Moore of Madison, honorable mention for best sports feature photo.
Students attending the conference were Woodbery, Tidmore, Ackerman, Murphy, Lavey, Kraft and senior staff writer Alicia Weldon. They were accompanied by Paul Isom, director of the Office of Student Media and UA’s faculty delegate to the SEJC.
There are 50 member institutions in the SEJC, which was founded 14 years ago by UA journalism professor Dr. W. David Sloan. Member institutions include Vanderbilt University, Louisiana State University, the University of Georgia, the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Tulane University, Loyola University of New Orleans, Emory University, Florida A&M University, Auburn University and other public and private regional schools.
