Eliza and Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. of Miami have announced plans to establish an endowed scholarship fund at The University of Alabama in honor of former NFL and Crimson Tide football star Derrick Thomas, who died Feb. 8.

On February 26, more than 200 high school computer whizzes from across the state will gather at The University of Alabama to take part in what has become one of the university’s hottest competitions, the annual Alabama Computing Olympiad.

State Housing Market Shows Signs of Slowing

As the year ended, the state’s housing market showed definite signs of slowing down, according to the Alabama Real Estate Research and Education Center at The University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration. Statewide, the average selling price for existing homes fell by almost $6,000 in the month of December, and the number of homes sold fell by 3.6 percent from the previous month. Even so, 1999 was still a banner year for housing in Alabama, according to Dr. Leonard Zumpano, the Center’s director.
