UA Faculty, Students Win National BEA Awards

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A team of students from The University of Alabama won a national award for an interactive media project, and faculty members from UA’s department of telecommunication and film brought home three top paper awards from the recent national Broadcast Education Association annual conference.

Miller Coop, of Trussville, and Anne Tyler Bushman, of Montgomery,won first place in the student interactive multimedia competition for small teams with their project on Tuscaloosa’s Miracle League. Coop and Bushman are both 2013 alumni of UA.

Dr. Michael Bruce, assistant professor, co-wrote the top paper in the international division, “A Comparison of the Visual and Story Frames Al Jazeera English and CNN Employed During the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.” Bruce also was awarded Best of Festival in the faculty sports division with “Houndstooth: Tradition. Community. Loyalty.” Best of the Festival is the top award given in the BEA Festival of Media Arts.

Dr. Yonghwan Kim, assistant professor, received the top award in the BEA research division with his paper titled “Like-minded media use and stereotypic perceptions: Exploring the connection between exposure to like-minded media and stereotypical perceptions.”

Dr. Andrew Billings, professor and Ronald Reagan Chair of Broadcasting, won the top paper in the gender studies category with “Parallel Lines of Commentary? The NBC Broadcast Network’s Primetime Depiction of Male Gymnasts at the 2012 Olympic Games.”

Dr. Chandra Clark, instructor, along with University of Oklahoma researcher Scott Hodgson, won an award of excellence in the faculty promotional video category with “Communicating Superstorm Sandy.”
