Staying Informed: How UA Keeps the Campus Updated in Severe Weather

Feb. 2-6 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Alabama

Clear and timely communication plays a critical role in keeping the UA community safe during severe weather.

The University uses several tools to share accurate information, deliver alerts and provide guidance when hazardous conditions threaten campus.

UA Safety App

The UA Safety app gives anyone with a smartphone fast access to essential weather information. The app provides a seven‑day forecast for Tuscaloosa and weather alerts for Tuscaloosa County, including a map showing affected areas. Users can find every campus storm shelter through the app’s interactive map and review Best Available Refuge Areas (BARAs) inside campus buildings.

The app also streams 92.5 FM UA Info Radio, which broadcasts weather updates, campus information and emergency messages. UA Alerts appear in the app as well, ensuring users receive official notifications quickly.

The UA Safety app remains one of the easiest ways to stay informed before and during severe weather. Download the UA Safety app for free for iOS and Android devices.

UA Alerts

UA Alerts is the official notification system for The University of Alabama.

The University sends alerts for severe thunderstorm warnings, tornado watches, tornado warnings and any time severe weather delays or suspends normal operations.

Alerts may reach you through text messages, emails, voice calls, UA business telephones, Alertus desktop notifications, the UA Safety app, digital signage, the campus PA system and UA Safety social media channels on X, Facebook and Instagram.

These multiple delivery methods help ensure everyone receives urgent information quickly.

Operational Delays or Suspensions

If the University has to delay or suspend normal campus operations because of severe weather, UA communicates the decision through a UA Alert, official UA email addresses, the UA homepage, the UA Safety app, UA Safety social media, 92.5 FM UA Info Radio and local media outlets.

Because weather conditions can change quickly, you should monitor these sources to stay informed and respond promptly.
