Don’t Let a Happy Independence Day Turn Into a Trip to the ER

Don’t Let a Happy Independence Day Turn Into a Trip to the ER

If you’re planning to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, be careful.

Fireworks light up the sky over the Black Warrior River.
The best way to enjoy fireworks is at a community-sanctioned event like Celebration on the River.

In 2019, at least 17 people died and about 10,000 were badly injured from fireworks-related incidents, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. An estimated 57% of the injuries were burns.

The safest way to enjoy a fireworks display is at a community-sanctioned event like the Fourth of July Celebration on the River at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater.

All fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal in many municipalities in Alabama including Tuscaloosa and Northport. However, if fireworks are legal where you live and you plan to use them, be sure to follow these important safety tips:

  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • Read and follow all warnings and instructions.
  • Be sure everyone is out of range before lighting fireworks.
  • Never aim or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the homes or buildings, dry leaves or flammable materials.
  • Never try to relight fireworks that have malfunctioned.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby in case of a malfunction or fire.

Remember, if you have an emergency, call 911.
