UA Law School to Host Symposium on Brown v. Board of Education

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. School of Law at The University of Alabama is planning a symposium that will explore Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark school desegregation case.

The symposium, Brown’s Promise of Equality: 65 Years in the Making, is scheduled for Friday, March 29, in room A255. The event, which is open to the public, will begin at 9 a.m. and is sponsored by the Alabama Civil Rights & Civil Liberties Law Review.

“Public school integration in America has steadily declined since the 1990s when the Supreme Court began prohibiting cross-district busing and dismantling court-supervised desegregation orders,” said Meredith Render, professor of law at UA’s School of Law. “The resulting de facto re-segregation of American schools has revived criticisms of ‘separate and unequal.’”

Legal scholars and experts will discuss racial segregation and diversity in Alabama public and private schools and how a public interest law firm fights for equality under the law. Erica Frankenberg, an associate professor of education and demography at Penn State University, will provide the keynote address on the impact and limits of implementing Brown.

Confirmed presenters are:

  • Kevin Brown, professor of law, Indiana University
  • Jonathan Glater, professor of law, The University of California, Irvine School of Law
  • Bryan Mann, assistant professor of educational leadership, policy, and technology, The University of Alabama
  • Joshua Thompson, senior attorney, Pacific Legal Foundation
