River Pitch Event to Spark Local Entrepreneurship

Business major Grant Becker explains the ammonium nitrate cooling process in KüLVAX. His team won the $50,000 grand prize at the Edward K. Aldag, Jr. Business Plan Competition last spring.

Do you have a new business idea that is worth sharing? Can you PITCH it in three minutes or less? If so, then come down to the Tuscaloosa River Market on Nov. 14 from 5-9 p.m. and take part in the 2017 River Pitch Business Idea Competition.

The competition allows students and community members to pitch their new business idea to judges for a chance to win one of eight different $1,000 prizes. Not only will participants have the opportunity to win money, but also they will get valuable feedback on their idea and potentially meet experts in entrepreneurship that will help improve their pitch and develop their idea into a business.

River Pitch is a joint effort of the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute (AEI) and EDGE Entrepreneurship Center, both of which are extensions of The University of Alabama Culverhouse College of Commerce, the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama and the City of Tuscaloosa.

Registration is required for participants to pitch their business idea. Registration is available on the AEI’s website at www.culverhouse.ua.edu/aei.

“Any solid business idea is worth bringing to River Pitch,” said Dr. Theresa Welbourne, executive director of the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute and EDGE. “With Tuscaloosa’s reputation for invention and innovation, we hope to see a great turnout from local budding entrepreneurs.”

The competition is a part of the Tuscaloosa area’s celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week, which takes place Nov. 13-19.

Global Entrepreneurship Week aims to inspire millions in 160 countries to engage in entrepreneurial activity. The week connects those looking to start their own business with potential collaborators, mentors and investors.

Additional AEI events in Tuscaloosa related to Global Entrepreneurship Week will be announced soon on the AEI’s website.
