UA’s Community Health Sciences Co-Sponsors African Film Festival

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The fifth annual Tuscaloosa Evening of African Film, co-sponsored by The University of Alabama’s College of Community Health Sciences, will be Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa.

The event will kick off at 2 p.m. with a live performance of African Dance, music and storytelling, followed by an award-winning children’s animation movie. “Kirikou and the Sorceress” is a 1998 African film classic written and directed by Michel Ocelot and drawn from elements of West African folk tales.

The adult program begins at 6 p.m. with two award-winning short films — “The Return/La Retour” and “Destino” — and the feature-length “Dazzling Mirage.”

A 2014 Nigerian drama directed by Tunde Kelani, “Dazzling Mirage” is an adaptation of a novel with the same name by Olayinka Abimbola Egbokhare. It tells the story of a young sickle-cell patient and the social and emotional challenges she faces.

The event is presented by the Edward A. Ulzen Memorial Foundation and Afram South Inc., two nonprofit organizations that support education and public health initiatives in Ghana, West Africa and West Alabama. The event is also co-sponsored by UA’s College of Community Health Sciences and Tuscaloosa’s sister city of Sunyani-Techiman in Ghana.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for youth 14-17 . Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2798092 and on the day of the event at the Bama Theatre box office.
