TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Cuban news anchor Cristina Escobar will visit The University of Alabama to talk about the current climate of Cuban journalism and how it is evolving with the developing relationship between the United States and Cuba.
The lecture, at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in Farah Hall room 214, is a part of Escobar’s visit to the United States, during which she will cover the U.S. presidential election for Cuban television. The event is free and open to the public.
“Escobar is essentially the Katie Couric of Cuba,” said Dr. Robert Olin, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “We are excited to have her on campus and to learn from her expertise — especially because her visit comes on the heels of the University’s Cuba Week. Her lecture will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Cuban journalism and our nation’s relationship with her country.”
After graduating from Havana University in 2011, Escobar became a national television figure in Cuba, primarily working for TV Cubana as an international affairs reporter and anchor. In addition to her wide coverage of Latin-American relations, she was a special reporter and correspondent during the 2014 U.S.-Cuba Talks as well as the anchor during President Barack Obama’s historic visit to Cuba earlier this year. She also consults with CCTV America on changes in Cuba and its relationship with the United States.
During the past year, Escobar spoke to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the International Congress of the Latin-American Studies Association about Cuba’s current political and economic climate.
