UA Launches Search for Inclusivity Leadership Position This Fall

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama is launching the process to create and fill a leadership position to guide UA’s continued commitment to enhancing the campus environment through equity and inclusion.

UA President Stuart Bell announced in November 2015 that a new diversity plan would become part of the university’s Strategic Planning Council work and that UA would begin assessing its current initiatives. The Council was formed to help shape UA’s overall strategic plan.

“We have witnessed tremendous growth on this campus, including students, faculty and staff from a multitude of cultures, backgrounds, ethnicities, religions and lifestyles,” said Bell. “Those differences make our campus richer, and we all benefit.

“Our goal in creating this leadership position is to enhance the engagement, support, and well-being for everyone on campus.  Our plans will ensure that we combine our commitment to academic excellence with an equal commitment to access and inclusivity.”

A firm with a strong focus on diverse executive searches has been contracted to assist UA in a nationwide search this fall for potential candidates to guide UA’s efforts.

The Desir Group, headquartered in Houston with offices in Atlanta and Chicago, will work with the university in the search and interview process and the preparation preceding it.

Firm representatives are expected to meet with key stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students and alumni, in coming weeks to further refine a plan for the search process.

UA commissioned research and consulting firm Halualani and Associates in March to begin a mapping study of the university’s current efforts related to equity, diversity and inclusion. The project, which is ongoing, will lay some groundwork for the new position by assessing the programs and courses already offered, as well as the progress being made on the campus and identifying opportunities for further growth.

In an April meeting with faculty and staff, Bell announced the goals of the new strategic plan, including a primary goal to enrich the institution’s learning and work environment by providing an accepting, inclusive community that attracts and supports a diverse faculty, staff and student body.
