EDUCATED GUESSES 2013 – For the 32nd consecutive year, The University of Alabama’s Office of Media Relations offers predictions from faculty experts for the coming year. While these “educated guesses” don’t always come true, our track record over the years has been good. So, what’s ahead for 2013? Look for self-driving cars in showrooms, rural hospitals to face tough choices and for the nation to take a ride over the fiscal cliff. Watch www.uanews.ua.edu for a news release with this year’s predictions. Contact: Chris Bryant, 205/348-8323 or cbryant@ur.ua.edu, or Cathy Andreen, 205/348-8322 or candreen@ur.ua.edu.

UA, NOTRE DAME WORK TOGETHER IN BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP PROJECT – Students and alumni from UA and Notre Dame will work together to have a positive impact in the Miami community during the Discover BCS National Championship Game. The service project will be Sunday, Jan. 6, from 1-4:30 p.m., with check-in and lunch beginning at noon.  In addition, UA students who will be in Tuscaloosa on Monday, Jan. 7, will have an opportunity to participate in a local National Championship Service Project from 9-11 a.m. Check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza and volunteers will be working with Tuscaloosa Parks & Recreation and the Tuscaloosa Volunteer Reception Center. CHRISTMAS COMES TO HAITI – UA social work graduate student Haley Heckman-Beech embarked on her third outreach trip to Haiti on Dec. 15. While previous trips to the country were to help run a medical clinic and conduct research for an independent study, Heckman-Beech will delivergifts and hygiene packets to more than 200 children at an orphanage this time around. Many families are still recovering from the devastating earthquake in 2010. For assistance, contact David Miller, communication specialist, at dcmiller2@ur.ua.edu or 205/348-0825.
