UA Awards Osher Reentry Scholarships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – For the third consecutive year, The University of Alabama has awarded 20 tuition-only scholarships of $2,500 each through a $50,000 grant from the Osher Reentry Scholarship Program.

“The University’s successful administration of earlier Osher Reentry Scholarship grants, along with its special services in support of adult students, has prompted the continued support,” said Foundation president, Mary Bitterman. 

The College of Continuing Studies at UA administers the scholarships. The scholarships are intended to benefit students returning to college to complete their first undergraduate degree, after experiencing a considerable gap in their educational career.

The 2010-2011 scholarship recipients:

Sennacherib Baity is a senior from Greenville, majoring in human development and family studies.

Donna Branyon is a senior from Berry, majoring in English.

Mary Brunette is a junior from Northport, majoring in Human Environmental Sciences, general studies.

Joe Foster is a junior from Tuscaloosa, majoring in computer sciences.

Traci Fowler is a senior from Coker, majoring in nursing.

Elizabeth Freeman is a sophomore from Northport, majoring in elementary education.

Michael Gendreau is a junior from Northport, majoring in finance.

Shelly Green is a senior from Talladega, majoring in elementary education.

Ottis Jacobs III is a junior from Brookwood, majoring in secondary education.

Betsy Joiner is a sophomore from Brookwood, majoring in accounting.

Alyson Lawrence is a junior from Tuscaloosa, majoring in consumer sciences.

William Logan is a senior from Biloxi, Miss., majoring in electrical engineering.

Marianne McCray is a junior from Buhl, majoring in biology.

John Mills is a junior from Tuscaloosa, majoring in management information systems.

Benjamin Pierce is a senior from Oneonta, majoring in mechanical engineering.

Matthew Rucker is a senior from Northport, majoring in accounting.

Jennifer Smith is a junior from Tuscaloosa, majoring in management information systems.

Marcus Smith is a senior from Montgomery, majoring in management information systems.

Reata Strickland is a junior from Tuscaloosa, majoring in interdisciplinary studies.

Teresa Tucker is a senior from Kansas, Ala., majoring in accounting.

The recipients were honored at a recent banquet at UA’s Bryant Conference Center. Dr. Carolyn Dahl, dean of the College of Continuing Studies, presented the Osher Reentry Scholarships to the recipients.

“We are proud to support these courageous students in building a brighter future,” said Dahl.

The Osher Reentry Scholarship Program assists students who have experienced at least a five-year interruption in their education and want to resume their undergraduate studies to complete their degree. The funding enables UA to award the scholarships to qualified students who demonstrate financial need, academic promise and a commitment to completing their degree.
