Environmental Justice Expert to Speak at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Breena Holland, assistant professor of political science at Lehigh University, will speak on “Environmental Policy and the Problem of Justice” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the Biology Auditorium at The University of Alabama.

The event is free and open to the public.

Her talk is part of the series Alabama Perspectives on Sustainability and Climate Change. The series in The College of Arts and Sciences is a two-year-long program of lectures, exhibits, forums and discussions that brings to campus and the Tuscaloosa community national experts to address the science, politics, economics and ethics of energy sustainability, climate change and its related social effects.

Holland’s research focuses on environmental policy analysis, particularly on questions concerning how to value environmental resources. Holland examines current government policies with a focus on how policy development and evaluation can be improved. She draws on a broad range of environmental problems to show why a society that values justice must change the value it attributes to environmental protection in its policy decisions. She has a doctorate from the University of Chicago. Her Web site is at http://cas.lehigh.edu/casweb/Content/default.aspx?pageid=160.
