UA Student Recreation Center to Hold Grand Opening

The University of Alabama’s School of Music is proud to announce its Celebrity Series concert schedule for 2004-05. This season’s four offerings are: Take 6; Gil Shaham, violin and Orli Shaham, piano; Frank Moody Memorial Concert with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra; and the Billy Taylor Jazz Trio. This year’s concerts offer a variety of styles. All four performances are sponsored by the Gloria Narramore Moody Foundation.

Nobel Prize-winner and internationally renowned physicist Carl E. Wieman will be at The University of Alabama on Sept. 21 and 22. Wieman will give a presentation on the work that won him the Nobel Prize, “Bose-Einstein Condensation: Quantum Weirdness at the Lowest Temperature in the Universe,” on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in 107 Shelby Hall on the UA campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The University of Alabama Center for Mental Health and Aging’s research on Alzheimer’s disease and caregiving played a major role in 22 states, most recently Alabama, receiving federal grants of nearly $1 million for three years to benefit programs for Alzheimer’s caregivers.
Cherqueta R. Claiborn, a graduate student at The University of Alabama in metallurgical and materials engineering, recently received the 2004 Mary R. Norton Memorial Scholarship for Women Award from ASTM International. Claiborn is the first UA student and the first woman in the state of Alabama to receive this international honor.
