UA College of Engineering Names New Department Head

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama College of Engineering recently named Dr. Lloyd A. “Pete” Morley as head of the department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE).

Morley began his academic career at Pennsylvania State University in 1971 as an assistant professor of mining engineering. He received his doctorate in mining engineering from the University of Utah in 1972. In 1975, Morley was promoted to associate professor at Penn State and then to full professor in 1980.

He joined the UA College of Engineering in 1985 as professor and head of the department of mineral engineering and then joined the department of electrical and computer engineering in 1996.

Morley has served the College in numerous capacities, including as the Garry Neil Drummond Endowed Chair of Mining Engineering from 1993 to 1999. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and has held several national offices in the international society, including IEEE vice president of technical activities and vice president of publication activities.

Currently, Morley is an IEEE Board of Directors nominated candidate for 2001 IEEE President-Elect. IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional society, with over 350,000 members in 150 countries.

In addition to his recent appointment, Morley was recognized in April at the College’s annual Distinguished Engineering Fellows Banquet, where he was named the outstanding faculty member of the year and was given the T. Morris Hackney Endowed Faculty Leadership Award.

Dr. Timothy J. Greene, dean of the College of Engineering, who announced the appointment in late June, said he looks forward to working with Morley in his new capacity. “I am thrilled that Pete has accepted the head of ECE department. He is a nationally recognized member of the IEEE community and is a proven leader, having served earlier as department head of mineral engineering.”
