UA’s Rural Health Scholar Programs Accepting Applications

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — High school juniors with an interest in health care careers and college life may get a preview of both through The University of Alabama’s Rural Health Scholars Program (RHSP) and the new Rural Science Scholars Program.

The Rural Health Scholars Program, held June 4 – July 8, is open to rural high school students who complete their junior year in May. Rural Health Scholars live in an on-campus dorm for the 5-week summer program, take UA courses in English and chemistry for college credit, make field trips to rural health facilities and the medical school in Birmingham and attend lectures on rural health. RHSP is conducted by the UA College of Community Health Sciences, a branch of the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

Applications, test scores and recommendations are due March 31. Participants are chosen based on academic achievement and interest in rural health careers. Approximately 197 students from 50 Alabama counties have attended the program since it began in 1993. This year, a similar program (Rural Science Scholars) for rising high school juniors interested in science and technology careers in rural settings (including teaching, pharmacy, and health) will be offered July 9 – August 11, 2000.
