Four UA Students Ranked in Top 20 in Hearst Journalism Awards Program

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Four students at The University of Alabama ranked in the top 20 winners in the 40th annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation Journalism Awards Program competitions and will receive certificates of merit.

Benita Newton of Deatsville won 12th Place in the In-Depth Writing competition. Lesley Hendrix of Athens won 12th place in the radio competition. Ryan Sherman, of Alabaster won 15th Place in the radio competition. Jeffrey Blackwelder, of Alpharetta, Ga., won 14th place in the television competition.

The Journalism Awards program is conducted under the auspices of accredited schools in the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, and fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. It consists of six monthly writing contests, three photojournalism competitions and four broadcast news competitions, with championship finals in all divisions.
